WHY Today's Farming Desperately NEEDS
Cana Harvest
Quoting from the 2008 best-selling book, THE DETOX STRATEGY...
Chemical "NPK" fertilizers (composed of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium) have been widely used in agriculture for over a century. These fertilizers stimulate plant growth by returning just three minerals to the soil, which normally contains scores of minerals. In this way, the soil is made deficient in those critical trace minerals that are not resupplied. This is similar to the situation we have created by enriching refined foods. After the refining process strips the food of dozens of critical nutrients, that food is "enriched" through the addition of just four nutrients (B1, B2, niacin, and iron, in a synthetic form). Here again, a situation of imbalance is created, which makes the deficiency worse, rather than correcting it.
NPK fertilizer further affects the soil adversely by acidifying it, which has the net effect of killing off soil micro-organisms whose job it is to break up and transmute, or change the nature of minerals for use by the soil. Without these critical microbes, soil minerals become locked up, and the health of the soil declines. Consequently, plants become malnourished, sick and easy prey for insects. Here we may make another comparison: over acidified soil is like the human body that has become overly acidic as a result of eating a junk food diet. Such a body also becomes prey to "bugs"—in the form of germs. The body that is overly acidic is toxic, for many toxins are of an acidic nature. By continually consuming commercial product that is grown
on nutrient-deficient soil and carries traces of toxic pesticides, we are further adding to the toxic burden carried by our bodies. Ultimately, the "pest" problem on farms will be solved not through the use of more potent pesticides but through restoration of optimal mineral balance to the soil in which crops are grown.
